Week 5 Recap
Angels knock off the undefeated Saints in overtime!
After a tough loss in week 4, the Angels bounce back in a big way. Mike Makesum led the Angels over the Saints. The Saints found themselves down by 12 points midway through the second quarter. They fought back and brought the lead to within 5 going into the 4th quarter. With 6 minutes left in the game, the Saints took the lead (40-39) with the help of big plays by Fumanchu and Brown. Both teams fought back and forth retaking the lead several times in the next few minutes. With thirty seconds to play, the Angels held a slim 47-45 advantage. Ivan Ragen, for the Saints, took the ball to the hoop and scored at the buzzer to force overtime. The Angels then outscored the Saints 6-1 in overtime to get the big win!
Lovinger lifts the Missionaries over the Mormons!
The Missionaries had control of the game early in the second quarter. They held a 12 point lead (28-16) and were expected to dominate the rest of the way, but Jefferson Jagmon, Eric Victor, and the Mormons weren't about to roll over. The Mormons battled back and tied the game with 5 minutes to go. Jefferson Jagmon hit a potential game winner when he nailed a big three pointer at the top of the arc with 30 seconds left. The Missionaries found themselves down 51-52, but calmly found the open man, Lovinger, to nail the game winner! The Missionaries moved into 1st place in the Modern Day Division with the win.
Hillsiders get their first win!
Bobby Young carried the Hillsiders to their first victory! Young scored 22 points to lead all scorers. Danes also pitched in 13 points and 6 rebounds. The two combined for 35 of the Hillsiders's 39 points. The Stripling Warriors losing woes continued. The Stripling Warriors are struggling to put points on the board (No players scored in double figures).
Liahonas and Nephites rumble!
Nephite fans wondered what Nephite team would show up against the Liahonas. Would the team that scored 59 points in a 20 point rout over the Pioneers? Or would the team that lost by double digits in its first two games?
The Nephites came out swinging. They opened the game scoring on their first six possessions. They led the top ranked team in the league 13-2 with 4:30 to play in the first quarter. The Liahonas found themselves in a position that they hadn't been in before - down big! How would they respond? Just as they have all season long, they remained consistent and fought back. They aren't the flashiest team in the league, but the Liahonas found a way to bring the lead down to 6 at the end of the first quarter (11-17). Campbell, for the Nephites, had 8 of his game high 18 points in the first quarter. The second quarter brought a shift in momentum The Nephites went as cold as they were hot, and scored only two points. The Liahonas continued to remain consistent and took a 23-19 lead into the break. The dominance for the Liahonas continued into the second half. They opened up a 16 point lead (42-26) with 7 minutes to go in the game before the Nephites would get hot! The Nephites ended just as they began. Campbell and Ulon had big three point shots to bring the Nephites within three points, but the Liahonas held on to stay undefeated (46-41).

Hey, I love the new look. You'll have to tell me how to add spreadsheets to the blog. Anyway, what an amazing game for the Nephites. They definitely proved that they can compete with the best. I like their swagger even though their record isn't very good. Man, you have had a lot of close ones. Exciting.

Thank you! Jana found a basketball background for me. The far edges are a little suspicious, but I like the bball in the background.
As for the spreadsheets, I actually paste the spreadsheet into our paint program, and then I crop it to fit around the edges. When I type a new post, I click the "Add an Image" button, and it pulls right up.

All of these close games are making up for the blowouts early in the season. It makes the game more fun to play when both teams have a chance.
I am thinking about adding the 57th ward next season... I will have to get our churchball averages and plug them in.
